Brandy’s recent public appearance should have been a celebration, but instead it sparked a wave of speculation about her looks.
First of all, love you, Bran Bran!
Brandy has people talking again. We literally just saw her and Monica at the Roots Picnic! This time it has nothing to do with a new song or book. Instead, the legendary singer is at the center of a weird, uncomfortable conversation about appearance, aging and the internet’s obsession with playing doctor. This is her health, not yawls!
Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Brandy Norwood received the Key to the City of McComb, Mississippi, and the Key to Pike County during a wonderful hometown celebration this month. She also pledged $100,000 for new middle school band instruments. That is the story.
But here we are.
Instead of focusing on the honor, social media zeroed in on Brandy’s slimmer frame. Before long, the comparisons started flying. Some people even brought up the late Chadwick Boseman! What? This conversation deserves a little more care.
There is absolutely no evidence that Brandy is dealing with a serious illness. None. Yet that has not stopped countless people from creating memes, posting reaction videos and offering diagnoses. What are we becoming? This is sad. Is there a University of Instagram medical program?
Weight changes happen for countless reasons. We just saw her! Looking extra good!
A person could be exercising more, changing their diet, getting older, dealing with stress, taking medication or simply living life. The point is that nobody outside of Brandy’s inner circle actually knows. Everything else is speculation. I think she looks just fine. I think there was a bad camera angle people ran with. When you look, she’s basically regular in the other shots.
Sadly, this is the downside of today’s social media culture. The distance between a keyboard and a celebrity has convinced some people that empathy isn’t necessary. Sadly, cowardice is on the menu and a lot of people are eating it up.
The Chadwick Boseman situation should have taught the internet a lesson, even though am now comparing the two.
Brandy has spent decades giving music, television and even books. She deserves better! Celebrate her and her major civic honor without becoming the latest target of body shaming.
Maybe the real issue isn’t Brandy’s appearance. Maybe it’s us!
We’ll leave it there. What do you think?
