Menace II Society star Samuel Monroe Jr.’s has passed away. The 52-year-old performer’s passing closes a painful medical saga for his family.
Samuel Monroe Jr. died Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital after severe infections devastated his health. He was 52.
Monroe’s mother Joyce Patton confirmed her son’s death in a Facebook post Aug. 27 following months of public updates about his worsening condition. The actor was known for memorable supporting roles in several movies that helped define Black cinema during the 1990s. Patton’s announcement.
“I want to thank all of my facebook family and friends new and old for praying for Samuel Monroe, Jr., my son. But today God called him home,” Patton said. “Please honor my final request to pray for the family especially his 3 children.”
His credits included Menace II Society, Tales from the Hood, Set It Off and The Players Club. Monroe’s forceful performances gave him a recognizable presence in films that remained culturally iconic long after their theatrical releases.

Monroe played Ilena’s cousin in the Hughes brothers’ 1993 crime drama Menace II Society. He later portrayed Bulldog in the 1995 horror anthology Tales from the Hood, Lorenz in the 1996 thriller Set It Off and Junior in Ice Cube’s 1998 directorial debut The Players Club, month other movies.
Monroe’s medical crisis became public in April when relatives disclosed that he was on life support.
His wife Shawna Stewart said he contracted meningitis while working in Las Vegas and visited several hospitals before receiving the correct diagnosis. She said the illness remained untreated for eight months and eventually spread to his brain and spine.
His condition grew more serious after he developed MRSA pneumonia and experienced kidney failure that required dialysis. Monroe later suffered repeated seizures and underwent three brain surgeries as physicians monitored swelling and fluid around his brain. His left lung also partially collapsed during the extended hospitalization.
He is survived by his wife and children Kingston and Brooklynn.
Monroe built his reputation one supporting performance at a time.
