Andy Weir Wrote a New ‘Project Hail Mary’ Adventure, Just Not in the Way You’d Expect

Project Hail Mary excitement is still running very high, but the urge to keep that energy going has already started to filter through. There’s all that Rocky merch starting to appear, but this latest tie-in is even more exciting. Coming later this year from Maze Theory is the VR video game Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, and it’s just released a first look. The fun video features author Andy Weir, who also wrote the game’s story, and film directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Though it’s billed as a trailer, it’s really more of a reaction video. Most of the trio’s excitement revolves around Journey Among the Stars‘ opportunities to interact with Rocky, who unsurprisingly remains endearing even in VR format. But the inside of the ship looks pretty cool, too:

According to IGN, players become main character Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling in the movie) to navigate a new adventure that’s part of the greater Hail Mary mission: “The ship’s systems are failing. Deep space grows increasingly uncertain. Using mixed reality, the Hail Mary itself bleeds into the player’s physical environment. They reach out to diagnose the problem, improvise the fix, and push the limits of what science and engineering can do under pressure. Humanity’s last hope is in the player’s hands.”

Rocky is along for the ride, of course. Weir characterized the game’s story as “the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie, something you can only experience in mixed reality.”

Fans are hoping that Weir will consider penning a sequel to his best-selling novel, which could then become a sequel to the blockbuster film. It’s something he’s teased might happen, though the book he’s currently working on is apparently a new concept that’s not related to Project Hail Mary.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars hits “major mixed reality and VR platforms” sometime in late 2026. It could be a long wait for Project Hail Mary 2, if that even ever happens. Will you be giving a thumbs-up to the game in the meantime?
